Fall Colors is the name given to an improvisational process developed by Gavin Kenyon and Ruairi O’Brien on a spring day in Houston. O'Brien records, manipulates, and loops the musical output of the other musicians, and plays those sounds back to them in the moment; unquantized, unprompted. The textures weave, multiply, and overlap in interesting ways, with waves of the past beating alongside those of the present.

For the instrumentalists, each recording is the aural equivalent of being confronted with a mirror. The artists are offered a unique opportunity- to play in an ensemble with themselves. For many, being confronted with yourself is a tricky task to navigate! The items presented here are the ones that Pretty Dad felt best rose to the challenge- just in time to celebrate the autumnal equinox.

All free improvisations were recorded by and with Ruairi O'Brien.
